Bill Hoffman

Player Profile

Position:
Head Coach

Alma Mater:
Eastern Kentucky - 1989

Bill Hoffman is in his fifth season as CBU's head cross country coach and his seventh season working with the program overall.

Hoffman has quickly taken the CBU cross country program to a higher level.

He recruited the program's first All-American, Stephen Hill. Hill finished 31st in the national championships as a freshman and 43rd as a sophomore. He has been All-GSC and All-South Region two years in a row as well. As a team the Bucs have been in the top seven of the GSC meet two years in a row, while the Lady Bucs have improved their finish three seasons in a row.

Hoffman started the Memphis Twilight Classic, the largest night-time cross country meet east of the Mississippi and the second-largest in the nation. Each year more than 30 high schools and 25 colleges participate in the races at Mike Rose Soccer Complex.

He has also spearheaded efforts to host the Gulf South Conference championships and the NCAA Division II South Regional Championships in alternating years.

Hoffman started coaching Men's cross country as an assistant coach at Murray State University in the 1990-1991 season. While at Murray State, he coached 3 Olympic runners, 4 All-Americans, and 8 All-Conference runners. In 1996 Hoffman became the head cross country coach at Germantown High School in Germantown, Tenn., where he coached former CBU runners Will Wright and Brent Ellis. His team gradually improved their finish in the state championships each year they qualified (1996 - 18th, 1998 - 12th, 1999 - 9th, 2000 - 8th, and 2001 - 5th). His 2001 fifth-place finish was the best ever finish of a Germantown cross country team. At Germantown, he coached 2 All State cross country runners placing 3rd overall in 2000 and 9th overall in 2001. He was also an assistant track coach at Germantown from 1996-2000 where he coached many all state runners and jumpers.

Hoffman was an All State cross country high school runner in Pennsylvania. He ran for Indiana University of Pennsylvania for two years before he transferred to Eastern Kentucky University. At EKU, he earned Ohio Valley Converence Runner of the Year honors in 1989 for cross country. He was the conference champion in track and cross country. He was a three-time All-OVC in track and cross country, and he was named to the OVC Academic Honor Roll three times. From 1991-1996 he ran competitively for Reebok Southwest Track Club and PowerBar. He competed in two World Cross Country Trails and won several Regional Road Races. His current personal records include a 4:12 mile, a 14:12 5K, and a 30:26 10K.

He is currently a physical education teacher at Riverdale in Germantown, Tennessee. He earned a BS in Physical Education from Eastern Kentucky University in 1989 and an MA in Health and Physical Education from 1998 Murray State University. He is married to the former Teri Moore and has a son, Colin and a daughter, Mia.
