Bucs Defeat Nine D-I's in Twilight

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University cross country team hosted the largest night-time cross-country meet in the nation Saturday night at Mike Rose Soccer Complex. 1,689 runners representing 201 teams finished Saturday night's races, which ranged in age from middle school to college.

In the college race, the Bucs finished 18th of 42 teams, defeating nine Division I teams in the process and finishing third among the seven Gulf South Conference schools in the race. The Lady Bucs finished 36th of 41 teams, defeating one Division I team and finishing seventh of the nine GSC schools.

Junior Stephen Hill (Collierville, Tenn./Houston HS) led the way for the Bucs, finishing in 33rd place with an 8k time of 25:38. Hill finished fourth among NCAA Division II runners. Junior John Waldorf (South Elgin, Ill./St. Edward HS) also ran a strong race as he finished 73rd of 341 runners in 26:26.

As a team, CBU earned 517 points, defeating NCAA Division I schools Memphis, South Alabama, Alcorn State, Central Arkansas, Arkansas State, Mississippi Valley State, Nicholls State, Tennessee-Martin, and Jackson State. Drake won the men's race with 79 points.

Junior Kelly Summons (Memphis, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) was the first Lady Buc to finish the 5k women's race, crossing the line in 22:15 to finish 226th out of 329 runners.

The Lady Bucs' 1031 points ranked 36th. Drake also won the women's race with 97 points, edging Saint Louis, who had 99 points.

The CBU cross country teams will be back in action in two weeks at the Gulf South Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 20 at Veterans Park in Hoover, Ala.
