No. 10 Statesmen Power Past Bucs

March 22, 2008

Final Stats

MEMPHIS--No. 10 Delta State hit six home runs on their way to a 9-4 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon, completing a sweep in the three-game Gulf South Conference West Division series.

The Statesmen (21-8, 5-1 GSC West) took control in the second inning. Anthony Palisini hit a two-run homer, then Hunter Jobes and Devin Goodwin hit back-to-back homers with two outs to give DSU a four-run lead they would never relinquish. DSU tacked on a run in the fourth, three in the fifth, and another in the sixth to take their biggest lead of the series at 9-0.

The Bucs (11-15, 3-3) got on the board in the seventh as Will Britt (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) and Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) singled to start the inning. Britt scored from third on a double play, and back-to-back two-out singles by Alvino Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) and Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) plated two more runs.

Escajadillo hit an RBI single in the eighth to bring the Bucs a run closer with runners on first and third and one out, but he was caught stealing in a rundown, and the Bucs couldn't score again.

Escajadillo and Foster each had two hits for the Bucs.

Justin Smith (4-3) earned the win for DSU with six shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks.

The Bucs will play 13 of their next 15 games on the road, beginning Tuesday afternoon as they face Crichton at USA Stadium in Millington. The Bucs' next home game is set for April 2 against Rhodes.
