Homers Lift UWF Past CBU 7-4

April 11, 2008

Final Stats

DECATUR, Ala.--West Florida hit four solo homers on their way to a 7-4 win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Thursday night in the Lady Bucs' first game of the Gulf South Conference Crossover.

The Argos (30-17, 10-6 GSC) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, and they never trailed in the victory.  UWF pitcher Emily Burge helped her own cause as she went 3-for-3 with three homers, homering in the second, fourth, and sixth innings.

The Lady Bucs (14-21, 1-16) began to cut away at the lead in the third, scoring a pair of two-out runs on doubles by Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) and Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) plus an error, trimming the UWF lead to 3-2.

They cashed in on another error in the fifth, cutting the lead to 5-3 on a two-out RBI single by Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS), but the Lady Bucs left the bases loaded that inning.

Mathews launched a homer to center in the top of the sixth, cutting the UWF lead to just a run at 5-4, but the Lady Bucs couldn't score again and UWF put it out of reach in the bottom of the inning on homers by Burge and Melissa Chastang.

Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) led the Lady Bucs, going 4-for-4 at the plate.  Ambers is the second CBU freshman to post a four-hit night this season, as King went 4-for-4 in a 13-11 loss at West Alabama in March.

Mathews and Maness went 2-for-4 as well.

The Lady Bucs will be back in action Saturday in the GSC Crossover when they take on North Alabama and No. 3 Alabama-Huntsville.
