Game 1 Stats | Game 2 Stats

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs collected 21 hits as they split a Gulf South Conference doubleheader with Southern Arkansas Saturday afternoon at Bland Field, winning game one 6-0 but dropping the second 8-5.

The Lady Bucs (16-26, 3-21 GSC) cruised to a 6-0 victory in the first game as Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) tossed a two-hit shutout.

The Lady Bucs scored first in the second inning as Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) doubled and scored on a Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) single.

An inning later, the Lady Bucs added two more. Back to back singles by Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) and Paige Wright (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) put runners on the corners, and King's single brought Mathews home. Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) singled Wright home to make the lead 3-0.

In the fourth inning, the Lady Bucs scored three more to set the final margin. Dunn and Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) singled with one out. Wright hit a two-run double and scored on a King single, giving CBU a 6-0 cushion.

King went 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Wright and Mathews each went 2-for-4.

In game two, SAU (9-28, 4-21) jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held on for an 8-4 win. In the first, Cheyenne Savony hit an RBI double to center. In the second, a pair of walks set up a Kilty Arny RBI double, and Joanna Jones hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 SAU.

The Lady Bucs allowed the lead to double in the fourth despite just allowing two hits. A walk and a single put two runners on, and a catcher's interference loaded the bases with one out. Arny hit a sacrifice fly to center, but the ball was dropped, allowing everyone to advance a base. Another sacrifice fly made it 5-0, and a Samantha Hoelscher single extended the lead to six runs.

Three straight singles followed by two RBI outs in the sixth allowed SAU to extend their lead to 8-0, but this time, the Lady Bucs would respond.

Nelson singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and scored on a homer by Mathews, her third of the year. Three straight singles loaded the bases up, and a throwing error and a Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) single pushed two more runs across, cutting the lead in half at 8-4.

CBU mounted another rally in the seventh as Mathews singled and scored on a two-out King double, but a foulout ended the game.

King and Maness each went 2-for-4, while Mathews was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Before the game, CBU honored its three seniors: Maness, Lauren Hearn (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS), and Wright.

The Lady Bucs complete their home schedule Wednesday afternoon with a GSC doubleheader against Ouachita Baptist. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
